8 Reasons It's The Bed.

Put a towel on the kitchen floor and lie down for an hour. Your hip finds the tiles anyway, and you'd quit before the hour was up. Their bed is the towel.

The cover is fine. The filling under it went flat years ago, so their weight lands on their hips and shoulders. They turn over, find a spot that isn't as hard, and stay there twelve to fourteen hours a day.

They'll do it again tonight. On whatever you put down.

The pause before they stand, the long stretch, the first few steps slower than the rest. On your dog it just looks like age. Your vet sees the same three things on a different dog all day.

Your dog pushes down to get up. The bed sinks under them, then slides on the tile, and their paws go with it. You watch it from the doorway. There's nothing you can do from there, and after a few tries they give up.

Ours doesn't sink and it doesn't slide. They get something to push against.

And it's the soft one. Soft foam flattens.

Ours has three. The top looks like an egg carton, so their hips, shoulders and elbows rest on dozens of soft bumps instead of pressing into one hard spot. Under that, a firmer layer that holds them up, and a hard base that keeps them off the floor.

Only the top is soft. The two under it stay firm, so it doesn't go flat. Not in ten years.

Spill something on the sofa and wiping the cover doesn't help. It went into the cushion.

Same with their bed. Years of drool and dirt soaked through the cover and into the foam, and foam doesn't go in the wash.

Ours has a waterproof liner under the cover. Nothing gets to the foam. Wash the cover and it's a clean bed again.

You've done this before. Maybe twice. You stood in the aisle squeezing them through the plastic, and carried it home thinking you'd finally sorted it.

If ours flattens in the next ten years, we send you a new one. You're never going back to that aisle.

You took your time over your own mattress. You read about the foam, you lay on it in the shop. Theirs came folded in a bag.

Some dog beds have flame retardants in the foam. Theirs might, and the tag won't say. They're face down in it for half the day.

Ours is CertiPUR-US certified, the same test they use on human mattresses. They aren't a pet, they're family. You can't do anything about their age, but you can do this.
